Darkroom Printing (Black & White) Workshop

​​​Overview
This two-day workshop, led by Charles Pritam Makhal, offers participants an immersive experience in analogue photography and traditional darkroom printing. Starting with a photo walk to capture images on film, participants will learn the complete workflow of shooting, developing, and printing black & white photographs.

Students will gain hands-on experience in:

Film photography techniques using point-and-shoot or personal cameras
-
Developing negatives and understanding the chemistry behind film processing
-
Scanning negatives to create positive digital files
-
Darkroom printing on silver gelatin paper, including contact sheets and photograms
-
Final print creation and review, producing high-quality black & white prints
By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid understanding of traditional analogue photography processes, the technical and creative aspects of darkroom printing, and a set of their own B&W prints to take home.

Day 1 - The day begins with an introduction and photo walk to capture images on film, followed by film processing and developing negatives. After a lunch break, participants will review their negatives and then scan and convert them into positive digital files, gaining hands-on experience in both analogue and digital workflows.

Day 2 - The day focuses on hands-on darkroom techniques, starting with silver gelatin printing, followed by photogram creation and contact sheet printing with review. After lunch, participants will work on final black & white prints, producing multiple sheets and photos. The session concludes with a print review, allowing students to assess and refine their work.

Point & shoot cameras, 1 roll of B&W film, chemistry, and photo paper (participants can also use their own cameras)

About Charles Pritam Makhal
Charles Pritam Makhal is a photographer and academic based in India. He is currently the Head of Academics for the Photography Department at Hamstech College of Creative Education, where he leads India’s largest still photography program. Makhal is recognised for his expertise in both analogue and digital photography, with a strong interest in street and portrait photography. Charles studied at the National Academy of Photography, pursued advanced studies at Coventry University (UK), and specialized in alternative printing and darkroom processes at Cambridge Regional College (UK). His work has been showcased internationally - from Paris to Hyderabad. Passionate about mentorship, Charles has conducted more than 100 workshops, inspiring and shaping the next generation of photographers.
